This Tuesday, May 15 marked the start of the LA Screenings Independents (LASI) 2018, event hosted at the InterContinental Century City in Los Angeles, through Friday 18, with a nourished presence of over 80 distribution companies from the US, Latin America, Europe and Asia.
In addition, more than 400 acquisitions, programming and production executives from the main broadcasters, media groups and digital platforms in Latin America were also present. And this first edition hosted in alliance with Natpe, has sparked more than one surprise, like the presence of buyers from Eastern Europe, more specifically a delegation of 6 networks from Moldova.
“A delegation of 25 executives from Eastern Europe is present, with a delegation of 10 executives from Moldova, so the alliance with Natpe has been very successful in terms of us continuing to expand this market to other territories,” Isabella Marques, president of LASI, said to ttvnews.
Turkish dramas, premium series and entertainment formats have been the genres that were mentioned most during this first day.

Endemol Shine Boomdog, the recently launched division of Endemol Shine North America, is present in LA with its first slate of new programming, featuring successful series such as MasterChef Latino (Telemundo) and Mira quién baila (Univision), as well as its drama series Nicky Jam: El ganador.
"It’s a great project, a biopic of Nicky, but unlike the other biopics that have been done, this one features Nicky Jam himself, which makes it a unique project,” Alejandro Rincón, CEO of Endemol Shine Boomdog, said to ttvnews. “It’s an enormous project that we filmed in Mexico, NY, Puerto Rico and Medellin. It’s incredible and it will go on air very soon.”
In addition, MasterChef Mexico, which will start its sixth season this year with TV Azteca, and Chumel with Chumel Torres, the original Endemol Shine Boomdog series which HBO airs in Latin America.
Endemol Shine Boomdog also offers new global formats by Endemol Shine, including All Together Now, Big Bounce Battle, Lego Masters and Family Food Fight.
Meanwhile, TV Azteca International arrived in Los Angeles with an extense catalog, featuring hit titles like the series Indomable por naturaleza, the capsules La historia es redonda, and the talent show La Academia, among others.
“This is a very important year. We are celebrating the 25th anniversary and we are about to launch a new season of La Academia, an original talent show; and us as a distributor we’re not only re-launching the format, but also the finished product, which is now entering production,” Patricia Jasin, VP of TV Azteca International, said to ttvnews.
In addition, Somos Distribution is presenting the series Underground: La historia del reggaeton, Súbete a mi moto: La historia de Menudo, as well as the documentary series La historia de los Mudiales, in addition to its catalog of Turkish dramas by Kanal D, among other titles.
"We are distributing the first season for Underground and we are closing co-production deals for the second,” Francisco Villanueva, VP and COO of Somos Distribution, said to ttvnews. “The first season is filmed in Puerto Rico and the second will feature scenarios in Miami, Colombia and Europe, which showcase the worldwide reality of the phenomenon,” he added.
In addition, FLI International is arriving at the independent market in Los Angeles with a portfolio of 80 Peruvian movies, including La peor de mis bodas, Sobredosis de amor -fourth co-production for FLI- and No me digas solterona, which is now in its eighth week on air with almost 900,000 viewers in Peru.
“I’m presenting a Peruvian talk show project about a psychic who solves cases and it’s spectacular, as well as a series called Santos latinoamericanos; in addition to El lado humano de la fama, 3 familias and Esto es guerra", Miki Ivcher, CEO of FLI International, said to ttvnews.
Lastly, RMVistar, distribution company led by Rose Marie Vega, is presenting a package of mystery movies, romantic comedies and holiday films from Canada’s Muse Distribution International, featuring The Aurora Teagarden, Emma Fielding Mysteries, Fixer Upper Mysteries, The Gourmet Detective, Lost Better Mysteries, among others.
“These are some of the highest-rated movies in the Hallmark network, which includes mystery, romance and comedy; programming for the whole family, with no violence, drugs, excess; ideal for broadcast TV networks in Latin America,” she said.
The first day of LASI 2018 ended with the opening party at the Grand Salon Ballroom, sponsored by Olympusat, with a show by Venezuelan singer Chyno Miranda.
Activities for Wednesday 16
The official agenda of activities for Wednesday 16 will focus around the “LatAm Summit and Networking Breakfast” (Grand Salon Ballroom), with keynotes by Tom Mohler, CEO of Olympusat, focused on Hispanic drama; and Dan Punt, director of FTI Consulting, about mobile content adaptation for LatAm millennials.
In addition and for the third year in a row, Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) is presenting K Dramas in the morning and the K Formats Screenings in the afternoon, to showcase new content from the main producers and distributors in the Asian country.
