TV Hits and Latin Artists Dominate YouTube‘s Most Viral Videos of 2017
Google's video platform has unveiled its list of the Top 10 Viral Videos of the year, where half the videos come from TV broadcasts, and the Top 10 Music Videos of 2017, where six of the 10 songs are performed by Latin artists.
It's December and that means it's time for the end-of-the-year countdowns to begin. And same as every year, YouTube has unveiled its list of the most viral videos of 2017, along with the top 10 music videos that ruled the charts this year.
And this year, TV played a major role on the list of viral videos, taking up five of the spots on the list, including the very first position, taken by a performance from Thailand's celebrity singing competition show, The Mask Singer.
12-year-old singing ventriloquist, Darci Lynn, and her performance on America's Got Talent on NBC ranked in fourth place, followed by Ed Sheeran's Carpool Karaoke appearance with James Corden from The Late Late Show in fifth place.
In sixth place is Lady Gaga's full halftime show from Super Bowl LI; with the now famous interview given by Professor Robert Kelly to the BBC, where he's interrupted by his kids, rounding up the TV appearances on the list.
The list of Top 10 Viral Videos is completed by a choreography from Kyle Hanagami for Ed Sheeran's hit song of the year, Shape of You, in second place; ping pong trick shots from Dude Perfect in third place; the "bad lip reading" of Donald Trump's inauguration day footage in seventh place; followed by the cult video "History of the entire world, I guess" by Bill Wurtz; and lastly In a Heartbeat, an animated short film by Beth David and Esteban Bravo.
The music videos list is topped, unsurprisingly, by Luis Fonsi's Spanish song Despacito (featuring Daddy Yankee) that recently became the most watched video ever on YouTube, with over 4.4 billion views, smashing the record set three years ago by PSY's Gangnam Style.
Other music videos in the top 10 list include Ed Sheeran's popular song Shape Of You and That's What I Like from Bruno Mars. The interesting part about this year's list is that 6 out of the 10 music videos are songs in Spanish, with artists like Maluma, Nicky Jam, Chris Jeday and Enrique Iglesias all making the list.
Unsurprisingly, these artists made their way into most Spanish-speaking countries' Top 10 Music Video lists, such as Spain and Argentina, where TV was also present in the general lists, with videos from the international singing competition Eurovisión.
Collectively, the 10 top viral YouTube videos have added up more than 633 million views (83 million more than last year's top 10 list) and have been watched for over 40 million hours.
The top trending videos are, in fact, not the most viewed videos for the calendar and are based on YouTube's algorithm that takes into account a combination of factors including measuring users interactions (number of views, shares, comments, and likes).
