According to the National Telecommunications Agency, pay TV in Brazil registered an addition of 16,000 subscribers in June, the first positive number in 2018 to date.

After five consecutive months losing subscribers in 2018, Brazil’s pay TV finally saw a positive number in June, as reported by the National Telecommunications Agency and shared by Tela Viva.

According to the report, the industry added 16,000 subscribers in June, a minimal growth that at least puts an end to the consistent decrease in subscribers this year.

In total, pay TV ended the month with 17.8 million subs. While it’s not possible to compare the number with the result registered in June of 2017 because the official numbers were modified, the decrease from May of 2017 is over 800,000 subscribers (there were 18,642,533 subscribers in Brazil in May 2017).

In terms of operators, Oi TV and Vivo were the main responsible for this recovery. The first grew by 17,600 subscribers to reach 1.55 million; and the second added 16,500 subs to reach 1.6 million.

Claro TV, however, lost 13,000 subscribers and ended June with 1.75 million. Sky lost 14,000 subs and ended the month with 5.2 million.

Net Serviços, the main cable operator, ended the month with 7.19 million clients, a stable number compared to the previous month.

Claro Brazil, meanwhile, stayed as the country’s main group with a total of 8.9 million clients, while the sum of the small operators reached 553,000 subscribers, 9,000 more than the previous month.
