According to the CNMC, the boom of pay TV services in Spain -which in Q1 covered 20.7% of the total TV consumption- is stealing viewers and income away from broadcast TV. The numbers, up next.

The rise of pay TV systems (cable and streaming) in Spain, which in the last year alone added 631,000 new subscribers, is taking a toll on broadcast TV.

According to a report by the National Marketing and Competition Commission (CNMC) in Spain, with numbers from Kantar Media, between January and March of 2018, broadcast TV (DTT) consumption marked its historic minimum: 76.6% of the total TV consumption.

That same quarter, pay TV reached 20.6% of the consumption (the remaining 2.6% went to satellite TV) and reached 6.72 million subscribers. This mean 137,000 clients more than the previous quarter.

Almost 89% of them (5.97 million) had the service hired under some sort of package, meaning, with other telephony and internet services.

While during the period analyzed total income from the pay TV sector grew 6% to 556.6 million euros, broadcast TV’s income dropped 4.8% to 427.5 million.

The CNMC report also indicates that ad sales continue to be dominated by broadcast TV: of the 437.7 million euros received during Q1, 415.3 million went to broadcast TV and 22.4 million went to pay TV.

Only Atresmedia and Mediaset Spain -the two main private TV groups- concentrated 85.1% of the total advertising income during Q1, while public TV got 5.4%.
