Announced for the first time
in April 2016, El César,
the new biopic based on the life of Mexican legend and international boxing star, Julio César Chávez, was officially presented this Monday in Mexico City.
Produced by Disney Media Distribution Latin America, TV Azteca and BTF Media, the series stands as the highly-anticipated successor for the regional phenomenon of Hasta que te conocí, given its similar production model, the names involved and the quality of its first episode, pre-premiered during the presentation.
Based on the life of music idol Juan Gabriel, Hasta que te conocí marked a before and after in the biopic genre. Also produced by BTF Media and Disney Media Distribution, alongside Somos Productions, the series registered notable ratings in almost 20 countries across the region, and aired twice in Mexico, where it became the highest rated series of the year in 2016.
"It's a story that has been disputed between many studios, many producers wanted it. We're incredibly blessed for having landed both projects," Fernando Barbosa, SVP and GM for Disney Media Distribution Latin America, said to ttvnews back in April during the announcement.
Presented as the successor for this ratings phenomenon, El César will make its debut in the region through Space on Monday, September 18 at 10:30pm. It will also be available on Telemundo in the US and Azteca 7 in Mexico as the first confirmed screens.
Disney Media Distribution will be in charge of its global distribution.
"The series has a very strong theme because I wanted all the truth to come out," Julio César Chávez said to ttvnews this Monday in Mexico City.
"I am very pleased and excited to be able to see this series come to life. Most of the people who get to be honored on screen have passed away, but I get to see it in real life," he said, thanking BTF Media for the chance to tell his story.
Marcelo Tamburri, VP and manager of Space, noted the series has international potential and is completely able to travel the international market.
"Disney and BTF have done an excellent job in terms of production, with an unmatchable technical quality. They made a completely exportable product," he said to ttvnews.
"It truly is an incredible product and it has everything that a biopic could have: values and the story of the rise and fall of a sports idol."
In this sense, Marcela Guirado, who plays Julio César Chávez' first wife in the series, said it's mostly a human story.
"It was very important to show the human side of someone who has it all in Mexico and is admired internationally, and to show what lies behind that success," she said.
Actor Armando Hernández, who plays Chávez, also thanked BTF Media for the opportunity: "It wasn't easy to take on this major challenge, not just for me, but for all my partners," he said, praising the efforts in research and preparation done during the months prior to filming.
He also revealed that he prepared for the role for almost 6 months, adding 100 days of shooting and working with almost 400 actors.
El César will have 26 episodes and is set to premiere on September 18th at 10:30 pm on Space across Latin America, with a two-episode premiere.
