According to Disney’s official figures, the sports-focused streaming service surpassed 2 million subscribers in less than a year since it launched, thanks to a deal struck between Disney and the UFC.

In April 2018, Disney announced the launch of ESPN+, a sports-focused standalone streaming service. By September, the service had racked up almost a million subscribers.

And it has not stopped growing. According to official numbers provided by Disney, in less than a year since the service’s launch, ESPN+ already has over 2 million subscribers thanks to its exclusive content, including live sports, MLB, NHL and MLS content and college sports.

However, the company says that what is mainly propelling this growth is the 5-year deal it struck with UFC, which led 600,000 consumers signing up for the service to watch the first Fight Night.

"We expect the expansion of combat sports content on the streaming service to drive continued growth in the months ahead", said Disney’s CEO Bob during the presentation of the company's financial results.

During the presentation, Iger also highlighted the performance of BAMtech’s platform, on which ESPN+ operates, explaining that this will be the tech that powers Disney+, the company’s new OTT service, on account of it being stable and capable of handling large volumes of traffic.

Disney+, set to hit the market later this year, will share many things with ESPN+, including its relationship with consumers and its ability to market content through Disney’s traditional channels.

It is also expected that Disney+ may be released as a bundle with Hulu and ESPN+, offered as one tech platform, albeit with separate libraries, in an attempt to “break away from the mess” of streaming services.

To be the link between the main players in the entertainment industry is not an easy task. It means creating a platform aimed at a group of highly informed and demanding professionals. But with great effort and commitment, we did it.
