In 2019, Nickelodeon Latin America celebrates ten years of local original production in Latin America.
"In 10 years, we have produced 10 original series,” says to ttvnews Tatiana Rodríguez, SVP & Brand Head, Kids & Family, Nickelodeon Latin America, a proud champion of this sort of original scripted content in the region.
In this regard, Nickelodeon is readying a number of new shows for 2019, among which the May 6 premiere of musical series Club 57 that will air in simulcast in LatAm and Brazil stands out.
In addition to that, RAI is set to broadcast the show in Italy.
"Club 57 is the most ambitious project we have embarked on since we started putting out original productions 10 years ago with Isa TKM in Venezuela,” Rodríguez explains. "What better way to celebrate this 10th anniversary than with our biggest project ever?”
Time-travelling musical series Club 57 (60x60’) is a co-production with Rainbow Media from Italy.
"We had written 40 episodes when they came on board. We did some re-writes to turn the male lead into a 1950s immigrant of Italian descent. These re-writes gave more depth to the story,” she says.
"This co-production has been a fantastic experience because we shot all the exteriors in a gorgeous Italian city called Martina Franca, in Puglia," adds Rodríguez.
Season 1’s pan-American cast includes talent from Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, and, of course, Italy. The female lead is played by Eva Luna Montaner, the daughter of renowned singer-songwriter Ricardo Montaner.
“Everyone in the Montaner family is a gifted musician, so we have entrusted them with the show’s original soundtrack comprising 16 songs. We are working on it with Ricardo Montaner and the Sony record label,” explains the exec.
One of the biggest challenges posed by the show’s original idea was setting the story in the 1950s. “Kids today see that decade as something prehistoric, but we thought it was fun to look back to the 1950s for inspiration. We modernized the color palette, though, which led to a visually spectacular series,” she asserts.
Club 57 set at Viacom International Studios
The show’s production marked the first occasion in which the whole of the two-stage facility owned by Viacom International Studios (VIS) in Miami (US) was used to make a show, over 22,000 square feet of sets and a steady cast of 22 members. Rodríguez sums it up: “For us, this is a super-production.”
Also, in the context of Natpe Miami 2019, Nickeloden LatAm announced season 2 of gaming and eSports show Noobees, a co-production with Mediapro and Televideo from Colombia.
"Season 2 was written by Marcela Citterio, the screenwriter behind Yo soy Franky and Chica vampiro, both big Nickelodeon hits", the exec says, adding: "We are yet to set a date to start principal photography, we have only started to put together the production plan.”
