According to data from Subtel on the third quarter of 2018, the satellite operator managed to surpass Movistar on the pay-tv ranking, which was dominated once again by VTR.
Pay-tv continues to grow in Chile, a trend that has remained unchanged for years.
According to data released by the Chilean Undersecretariat of Telecommunications (Subtel in Spanish), by the end of the third quarter of 2018 pay-tv reached a 58.4% penetration rate in the country, with a total of 3,363,694 subscriptions.
This means that, as of September of this year, 18.1 of every 100 Chileans had subscribed to a pay-tv service.
The numbers represent a year-on-year growth of 3.4% from the 3.2 million subscribers tallied at the end of the third quarter of 2017.
According to Subtel, "the increase in pay-tv subscribers has benefited most of the companies, due to an increase in the use and demand of this service nationwide."
Thus, although VTR maintains the largest market share with 32.2% of the total subscriber base (1.08 million), the change comes in the form of the second most popular company.
During July-September 2018, Directv managed to rise as the second most hired service by Chileans, with 683 thousand subscribers and a 20.3% market share. This means a 1.1% increase compared to the same period last year (19.2%).
Movistar, on the other hand, saw its customer base reduced from a 20% market share at the end of September 2017, to 19.9% share this year (670 thousand households).
Third on the ranking was Claro, which completed the third quarter with a 12.0% market share (404 thousand households), 0.5% less than a year ago.
The rest of the combined operators made up the remaining 15.6% market share.
