A+E Networks, Viacom, Discovery, Scripps and AMC Networks joined forces to launch Philo, an online TV offer sans sports channels, for US$ 20 a month, says The Wall Street Channel.

Sling TV, Directv Now, Playstation Vue, YouTube TV, Hulu Live and soon, Instant TV… The up-and-coming skinny bundle market (reduced online TV packages) continues to grow in the US.

This Monday, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) published a report claiming industry heavyweights like A+E Networks, Viacom, Discovery, Scripps and AMC Networks have joined forces to launch their own online TV offer in the US.

The new service, called Philo, will cost just US$ 20 a month and won't include sports content, which often causes prices to increase.

According to WSJ, the joint venture will be launched in beta form in the next few weeks.

And while not many details have been revealed at the time, it would make sense for Philo to offer networks from these pay TV players, such as MTV, TLC, History, Nickelodeon or AMC, for instance.

In light of pay TV's evident crisis in the US, which is now facing "unprecedented changes", several directors from these companies -such as Viacom CEO, Bob Bakish, or Discovery CEO, David Zaslav- have been stressing the need to offer skinny bundles for low prices, leaving aside news and sports.

However, Philo won't have it that easy. It must make room for itself amidst other powerful options, which have already become solid players: according to recent numbers, Sling TV has 2 million subscribers, Directv Now is close to half a million, and YouTube TV reached 2 million downloads.

To be the link between the main players in the entertainment industry is not an easy task. It means creating a platform aimed at a group of highly informed and demanding professionals. But with great effort and commitment, we did it.
