With a notable presence of buyers from Europe, Russia, Asia and Latin America, the audiovisual industry is gathering for three days in Biarritz, France, for a new edition of TV France International’s Rendez-Vous.

Once again and same as every year, the French audiovisual industry is showcasing its newest initiatives for the international market at its traditional Rendez-Vous in Biarritz, organized by TV France International.

And this time, the event welcomed 67 French exhibitors and more than 260 buyers from around 60 countries, including a notable presence of buyers from Europe, Russia, Asia and Latin America.

“We know thanks to the survey that we do every year that this has been one of the most important ones in content sales. Animation and fiction are still the genres that grow the most,” said Hervé Michel, president of TV France International.

This growth, which isn’t even in every territory, is particularly interesting in Latin America, where animation and documentaries are still the go-to content for public and cultural networks in the region.

In this sense, Laurene Voilliot from Only Distrib, spoke to ttvnews about her new show Super Nature and its excellent performance in the international market, especially in Latin America.

"It’s a show about biomimicry, with five, 52-minute episodes, which has gotten great interest in the most important markets such as Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, where we have had a great relationship for years," she said.

Voilliot spoke about the interest in meeting with some of the Rendez Vous’ newcomers, such as reps from NBCUniversal Spain, Canal 7 in Argentina or HINTV in the US.

“Mexico is one of the main markets when it comes to thinking about French content exports,” said Juliette Lecuyer, responsible for market research in Latin America for TVFI, adding: “Thanks to networks like TV UNAM and Canal 22, Mexico is one of the main buyers for French content, same as Brazil, through Globo’s public and pay TV networks, in addition to Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.”

“This year has been special because of the main markets’ political context, so we are waiting to see what the results are towards the end of the year.”

As far as the event’s agenda, Avril Blondelot from Eurodata offered a snapshot of French content and the new wave of series bolstered by Federation Entertainment, AB Distribution International with the series The Mantis, Largardere Studios Distribution with Tandem, or Gaumont Distribution with The Art of Crime, among others.

The afternoon featured a talk about the Audiovisual Production Network in France, led by Nathalie Sonnac, researcher specialized in the audiovisual production economy in France, who offered a few numbers for the industry, including a growth in audiovisual companies: almost 4000 companies versus the 1400 there were in the year 2000.

And the day ended with a screening for the first episode of the new series Alexandra Ehle by Film & Picture, followed by a space devoted to social meetings the Ambassadors Lounge of the Biarritz Casino, under the motto L’Age d’or des chateaux forts.

The event will allow buyers in attendance to access more than 1100 productions in the screening room. And after the event, the organization will once again analyze the viewing data per company and content.

To be the link between the main players in the entertainment industry is not an easy task. It means creating a platform aimed at a group of highly informed and demanding professionals. But with great effort and commitment, we did it.
