La mejor canción jamás cantada, slated to hit TVE’s prime time in February, is a family-friendly format that lends itself to being adapted to “many countries across the world”, claims Tinet Rubira, head of Gestmusic (Endemol Shine) interviewed by ttvnews.
Next February 15, RTVE’s main channel La 1 will see the primetime debut of La mejor canción jamás cantada (The Greatest Song Ever Sung), an offering intended to bring families together in front of the small screen.
On Thursday, the talent show was launched in Madrid by RTVE and Gestmusic (part of Endemol Shine Group), the production company that created the format in quetsion as well as other successful ones like Operation Triumph and Your Face Sounds Familiar.
“We have designed a big music show, a gala like they used to have in the past, with ballet dancers, a live audience of 500 people, music, glitter, lights, a powerful sound design. It’s quite an undertaking,” says Tinet Rubira, head of Gestmusic, to ttvnews.
La mejor canción jamás cantada is about songs, not singers, facing off against one another. In each show, renowned artists will perform the 10 most popular songs of the last ten years in Spain, from the 1950s all through to present day.
"We want the show to click with young viewers, so we’re including young performers that the young are well acquainted with. These artists will introduce these viewers to songs older people know well because they are the songs of their youth. Through this mix, we aim at delivering a family-friendly show,” says Rubira.
Thus, along with the performers there will be judges, a live audience and special guests, as well as host Roberto Leal.
"We want to turn TVE’s Friday nights into a party around music and reminiscing, but without making it excessively nostalgic, something with a modern, young feel,” stressed the exec.
"That is why we have recruited Youtube star Jaime Altozano, who is also a songwriter and producer, to explain what each decade sounds like and why. There will also be room for humor with David Amor, who will remind us of what people found funny in the 50s, 80s, etc.”
Also, La mejor canción jamás cantada will put out an app for viewers to vote from home their favorite songs from each decade. The top 10 songs voted by the audience will be performed during the weekly gala.
A “travel-inclined” TV format
"We’re on our toes because, even though the show hasn’t premiered in Spain yet, there is already interest in countries like Portugal, Italy and France, where they are paying attention to how the format performs, because usually this kind of shows work,” says the exec.
Gestmusic aims to repeat the global adaptations craze brought about by hit talent show Your Face Sounds Familiar, the most successful and widely adapted Spanish TV format (more than 40 versions).
They are confident La mejor canción jamás cantada will deliver, since it is based on remembering songs from each country, in their own language.
"That’s why it’s an exportable format to a many countries across the world, because every country has a story. I think it has what it takes to become a “travel-inclined” TV format, because it is based in the universal language of music, nostalgia and humor,” concludes Rubira.
To be the link between the main players in the entertainment industry is not an easy task. It means creating a platform aimed at a group of highly informed and demanding professionals. But with great effort and commitment, we did it.
