Turner confirmed on Tuesday its plans to shut down Esporte Interativo channels in Brazil, although it does plan to maintain the brand active through digital.

On Thursday, Turner Brazil announced to both its employees and pay-tv operators that it's shutting down Esporte Interativo channels in Brazil.

The decision was announced through a press release, which also detailed the shutdown is expected to happen in the "next 40 days."

According to the specialized media outlet Tela Viva, hand in hand with the shutdown, Esporte Interativo's channels will air reruns of their shows on a loop until they are removed from all operators.

Tutner's plan is to change all sports broadcasts to the other networks in the group like TNT and Spain, like it happens in the US. The group currently holds the rights to tournaments like the Champions League (together with Facebook) and Brasileirão.

However, the Esporte Interativo brand will continue to stay active through digital and on OTT platform El Plus, which will still be available for operators to commercialize as part of their premium packages.

"Unfortunately, the Brazilian pay-tv market has fallen behind during the last three years and the signs of recovery are still very limited. And that's in addition to cost of sports rights, the sharp decline in the advertising market and the cost of maintaining all channels on air. This is the best time to change, reduce costs and adopt a new strategy for the broadcast of events," said Antonio Vive Antonio Barreto, Turner's General Manager for Brazil, told Tela Viva.

In fact, according to Barreto, the change will help Turner's sports events reach larger audiences, wince both Space and TNT have a better penetration rate than Esporte Interativo.

Turner is an Esporte Interativo shareholder since 2013, when it acquired a 20% stake on the network. In 2015 it assumed complete control over the network.
