After rumors placed Amazon Video ahead of the race for a Lord of the Rings TV adaptation, the streaming platform has finally confirmed the acquisition of rights with a multi-season commitment.

The Lord of the Rings became the hottest topic a few weeks ago when various media outlets reported there was major interest from services like Netflix and Amazon to produce a TV adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien saga.

Amazon was ahead of the race then and now the streaming area of the e-commerce giant has finally confirmed the acquisition of the local television rights with a multi-season commitment.

Produced as an Amazon Prime original by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema, the show will explore new stories and characters from Tolkien’s Middle Earth before the events of The Fellowship of The Ring.

The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, the head of scripted series at Amazon Studios.

“We are honored to be working on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

The deal, which makes Amazon the first ever outlet to adapt the novels for a multi-season series, also includes a potential additional spin-off series.

“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” said Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins.

The saga has previously been adapted for film, including the well-known trilogy from Peter Jackson and also for television with a little-known Finish adaptation titled Hobitit, focusing on the story of Frodo and Sam.
