According to recent research from Dataxsis multi-national regional operators America Movil, AT&T, Televisa Group, Telefonica Group and Clarín Group account for almost two-thirds of the market.

Which operators are the top dogs when it comes to pay-tv in Latin America? According to the latest quarterly research (Q1 2017) from consulting firm Dataxis, the regional market is dominated by five multi-national regional operators which account for almost two-thirds of the market.

Thus, the pie chart is mostly divided between America Movil, AT&T, Televisa Group, Telefonica Group and Clarín Group, with the top three capitalizing on more than half of the market.

The leader, America Movil, gathers one fifth of the subscribers of the region (14.6 million subscribers), more than total markets of Argentina and Colombia.

It's worth mentioning that all these groups are multi-nationals that operate at least in 2 different countries, like Grupo Clarín, or even more, as is the case with America Movil, which operates in 14 territories.

Furthermore, the research also shows that these groups have a very high markup quota - 30% or more - in countries where the where they have the strongest pay-tv operators.

For example, with its subsidiaries Izzi Cable and Sky Mexico, Televisa Group occupies 61% of the pay-TV market in Mexico and America Movil acquired more than 51% of Brazil's subscribers with Claro Brazil and Blue.

Another point of interest highlighted by the research shows that, in addition to geographic diversification, these groups also have a diversified business. All of them -except for AT&T- operate as fixed-line and broadband players, generally in countries where they already offer a pay-tv service.
