The numbers were revealed by chief content officer Ted Sarandos during a New York conference, where he also announced 470 series and original movies are coming before the end of year, thus reaching 1,000 original titles in 2018.

Netflix had already announced an US$ 8.000 million dollar investment on new content. And now, content officer Ted Sarandos revealed 85% of the company's entire budget is spent on the production of original series and movies.

This percentage equals a considerable increase in the number of titles belonging to the company's catalogue of originals. According to Sarandos, it will be comprised of 1,000 titles - between movies, series and documentaries - by the end of 2018.

Out of those, 470 titles have yet to premiere, and will do so before the end of this year.

But is the spending justified? According to the executive, the powerful bet on original content has to do with viewing data of a service that's become the leading streaming platform: nowadays, more than 90% of Netflix subscribers regularly watch original programming.

In addition to viewing trends, Netflix is faced with an ever-growing digital ecosystem that's more competitive than ever before, so original programming acts as the streamer's main differentiator.

"The creators we’re talking to, they watch Netflix and they want to be on our network," said Sarandos at MoffettNathanson's Media & Communications Summit 2018 in New York this past Monday.

The company's chief content officer had already mentioned that, for 2019, Netflix expects originals to make up for half of its catalogue.
