Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix, has revealed that the platform is in "active discussions" with Disney to retain its deal over Marvel and LucasFilm's properties well over 2019.

Although Disney made the shocking announcement that it will be pulling out of Netflix by 2019 in order to launch its own OTT service, some of the company's properties like those under the Marvel and LucasFilms umbrella might not be included in this new platform.

In fact, Netflix's Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos revealed to Reuters this Friday that both companies are currently in "active discussions" to extend their alliance well beyond 2019 for content from Marvel and LucasFilms.

As of right now, it is not clear is Disney will take advantage of these properties for its own OTT service or if it will leave them open for negotiations, with several other companies like Amazon, Hulu or HBO as possible candidates for an acquisition.

As for Disney's OTT plans, Sarandos mentioned he thinks the service will be a complementary platform and not a competing one, since it aims to offer more family-oriented content.

In addition, he also mentioned the move seems like a "natural evolution" that Netflix had been expecting for some time now.

"That’s why we got into the originals business five years ago, anticipating that the negotiations to license content may be not as easy a conversation with studios and networks," he explained.

Currently, the relationship between Disney and Netflix will continue as it is in all territories outside of the US, including Latin America and Spain.

To be the link between the main players in the entertainment industry is not an easy task. It means creating a platform aimed at a group of highly informed and demanding professionals. But with great effort and commitment, we did it.
