The Apple TV comedy won 6 awards, making it the biggest winner of the night, followed by HBO’s The Pitt and Apple TV’s Pluribus with two each. The full list of winner, up next.
Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay led the 78th Emmy Awards with six wins, including Outstanding Comedy Series. HBO Max’s The Pitt won Outstanding Drama Series, while Apple TV’s Pluribus and The Pitt tied for second place with two awards each.
Peacock’s The Traitors won Outstanding Reality Competition Series for the third consecutive year, and CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won Outstanding Variety Series for the second year in a row.
Widow’s Bay, a comedy-horror series about a haunted New England island, made history with 14 Emmys overall—six on the night and eight at the previous ceremony—surpassing the record set by last year’s The Studio. Its other wins included acting awards for Matthew Rhys, Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root, as well as writing and directing awards for Katie Dippold and Hiro Murai.
The Pitt also made history, becoming the first series since Mad Men to win Outstanding Drama Series for its first two seasons. Noah Wyle repeated his win for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, a feat last achieved by Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad in 2009.
Matthew Rhys became the first performer to win two Emmys for leading performances in the same year, taking home awards for Widow’s Bay and Netflix’s The Beast in Me. Allison Janney and Jean Smart each reached eight acting Emmys, tying the record held by Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Other highlights included Sally Field becoming the oldest winner of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and Stephen Root becoming the oldest winner of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Hiro Murai also made history as the first Asian director to win Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series.
HBO Max’s DTF St. Louis won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Michael J. Fox received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his work supporting Parkinson’s research through his foundation.
The ceremony, hosted by Mariska Hargitay, also featured tributes to Dolly Parton and late industry figures. It was broadcast live on NBC and Peacock from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
