Globo kicked off its Mipcom 2026 agenda with a showcase at the Carlton Hotel in Cannes, announcing a new distribution agreement with the BBC for its original series Blood Red (Vermelho Sangue), alongside several international partnerships aimed at expanding the reach of its productions and formats into new markets.

The first season of Blood Red, a young-adult fantasy series combining supernatural elements, romance, and Brazilian mythology, will arrive in the UK through BBC Three and BBC iPlayer, Angela Colla, Head of International Business at Globo, announced during the showcase, titled How Premium Storytelling Creates Engagement Beyond the Screen.

“We are excited to announce here that the first season of Blood Red has been licensed to the BBC, bringing this extraordinary world to British audiences,” Colla said. “The BBC acquisition is another example of how understanding audiences helps stories travel further. And helping our partners find that audience connection is at the heart of what we do. And our work does not stop when the finished content is delivered. Together, we follow performance, share insights and work with partners to unlock each title’s full potential, from launch strategy to audience engagement.”

Rodrigo Nascimento, Head of Business Development and Sales – EMEA at Globo, highlighted that Blood Red became the most-watched Globoplay original series among younger audiences during its first 30 days on the platform. The show’s second season has just premiered in Brazil, demonstrating, according to the executive, how a story deeply rooted in Brazilian culture can connect with international audiences interested in fantasy storytelling.

Hosted by journalist Cecilia Malan, the presentation also featured the latest developments in Globo’s international adaptation strategy, with new projects moving forward in Portugal, Türkiye, and Greece.

One of the announcements came from Portugal, where SIC is preparing Avenida Portugal, its local adaptation of Brazil Avenue (Avenida Brasil), with filming scheduled to begin in November, according to Vanessa Fino Tierno, TV Business Director at SIC.

“Our partnership has lasted 30 years. We’ve acquired the best telenovelas, and now we’ve decided to adapt Globo’s best scripts,” said Tierno, who highlighted the success of SIC’s Portuguese adaptation of Pages of Life (Páginas da Vida) and confirmed that production on Avenida Portugal will begin next month.

Globo’s partnership with Ay Yapım was another highlight of the event. Following the Turkish adaptation of Brazil Avenue, titled Leyla, the companies recently renewed their agreement to develop three additional productions, beginning with a new version of Fina Estampa, under the international title The Life She Built.

“I find this relationship is like a drama. It’s a love story,” said Kerem Çatay, founder and CEO of Ay Yapım. “We will produce one of Globo’s titles a year. Leyla was the best example. As of tonight, we have the remake of Fina Estampa.”

Çatay also suggested that the collaboration could eventually work in both directions, with Globo exploring Ay Yapım’s catalogue for potential adaptations.

In Greece, Globo confirmed progress in its partnership with Alpha TV for the first international adaptation of The Others (Os Outros), one of Globoplay’s most successful original productions. The agreement also includes a local version of All the Flowers (Todas as Flores).

“In today’s market, proven IPs offer something valuable,” Nascimento explained. “A successful adaptation is not about recreating every detail. It is about identifying the emotional truths that made a story resonate in a specific territory, and reimagining them for a new audience and culture. That is why the strongest formats continue to travel. Not because they stay the same, but because they remain meaningful wherever they go.”

Globo and Endemol Shine Brasil to Develop Original Formats

Unscripted entertainment also featured prominently in the showcase, led by the announcement of a new strategic partnership between Globo and Endemol Shine Brasil, part of Banijay Latin America, to co-create original Brazilian entertainment formats with the potential to become global franchises.

Under the agreement, Globo will have priority rights to exploit the new formats across its portfolio of channels and platforms, while Endemol Shine Brasil will lead international opportunities through Banijay Entertainment’s global network of more than 170 labels across 25 territories.

Nani Freitas, CEO of Endemol Shine Brasil, and Laurens Drillich, CEO of Banijay Latin America, joined the presentation to celebrate a longstanding partnership that has delivered some of Brazil’s biggest entertainment hits, including Big Brother Brasil, No Limite, The Masked Singer, Dança dos Famosos, and The Wall.

“We are celebrating this new chapter. Our partnership goes back many years, and we have worked together on some of Brazil’s most successful entertainment formats,” the executives said. “We now have the opportunity to take this partnership even further, combining Globo’s creative strength with Endemol’s experience to create strong formats with global reach.”

Among Globo’s recent unscripted successes, Nascimento highlighted Stars of the Show, whose third season reached more than 75 million people and generated 110 million views across social media platforms.

Super Dramas and Audience Engagement

Beyond the commercial announcements, Globo’s presentation focused on its strategy to develop content capable of building lasting relationships with viewers beyond the screen.

“Today, it’s not about reaching millions, it’s about generating relevant conversations,” Colla said. “A plot can bring you into a story, but characters, emotional investment, moral dilemmas, and complex relationships are what keep you there and drive conversations.”

The executive explained that Globo uses the term super dramas to describe productions that combine strong emotional arcs, memorable characters, and lasting relationships with audiences across different platforms and generations.

In this context, the company presented To Love Is to Care (Quem Ama Cuida), its latest international offering in the genre, combining high production values with a cinematic approach. During the event, Globo screened exclusive footage from the telenovela and a message from Leticia Colin, one of its stars.

Nascimento also highlighted the reach of Three Graces (Três Graças), which connected with more than 146 million Brazilians, and the impact of the remake of Anything Goes (Vale Tudo), which extended conversations about its characters to social media.

As an example, Colla mentioned the creation of a real social media profile for Maria de Fátima, a character from Anything Goes, allowing viewers to continue interacting with her beyond the episodes.

The executive also emphasized the social impact of Globo’s fiction, noting that searches related to Alcoholics Anonymous increased by more than 150% in Brazil after a character attended a meeting of the organization.

This aspect of Globo’s storytelling will be recognized during Mipcom 2026, when the company receives the MIPCOM Recognition for SDG Impact, presented in partnership with the United Nations.

In streaming, Nascimento also highlighted the performance of The Playoffs, which achieved the widest reach for a Globoplay production in five years, and Emergency 53, which became the platform’s most-consumed fiction title during its first seven days.

“We believe scale is not about reaching everyone with the same story. It’s about understanding that different audiences have different needs,” Colla said.

The presentation concluded with a reference to the return of Brazil Avenue, one of Globo’s most successful titles, and an invitation to international buyers to explore new collaboration opportunities during Mipcom 2026.
