The stars and productions from Latin America and Spain stand strong among the nominees for the 2021 International Emmy Awards. Globoplay takes the lead with four original productions in the running.
This Thursday, the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 2021 International Emmy Awards. The 44 nominees span 11 categories, a record number from 24 countries.
“We are very proud of our nominees and the record number of countries,” said Bruce Paisner, president and CEO of the International Academy. “For those who feared that the pandemic would slow down television production around the world, this is your answer.”
Among the countries of origin of the nominated titles or interpreters, Spain and five Latin Americans stand out: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico.
In the individual categories, Christian Tappán is a finalist for his work in Colombian series El robo del siglo (Dynamo Producciones / Netflix), Argentina’s Valeria Bertucelli for El cuaderno de Tomy (Pampa Films / Netflix) and Spain’s Ane Gabarain for Patria (Alea Media / HBO Europe).
In terms of titles, Chilean series El presidente (Gaumont / Amazon Studios) competes in the Best Drama category, Colombia’s Promesas de campaña (Foxtelecolombia / Claro Video) in the Best Comedy category, the second season of Mexico’s The Masked Singer (EndemolShine Boomdog / Televisa) in the Best Entertainment Format caregory and the second season of Gente hablando (Set Màgic Audiovisual / Atresmedia) in the Short-Form Series category.
Brazil’s Globoplay is nominated four times: Cercados for Best Documentary, Diário de um confinado as Best Short Series, Amor de Mãe as Best Telenovela and Todas As Mulheres do Mundo as Best Miniseries. The fifth Brazilian title on the list is Netflix’s Emicida – Amarelo: E Tudo Pra Ontem.
Another notable aspect is that Egypt has been nominated for the first time, thanks to Menna Shalabi’s performance in the miniseries Every Week Has a Friday.
The winners will be announced in an in-person ceremony in NYC on Monday, November 22.
