Netflix is once again betting on major historical, tension-filled stories. Peter Morgan, creator of The Crown, is bringing Ira Levin’s acclaimed 1976 novel The Boys from Brazil to the screen in an original Netflix production that promises to become one of the platform’s most powerful upcoming titles.

The five-part limited series will explore themes such as obsession, vengeance, and the unsettling endurance of hatred over time. Its central question: When the world tries to forget its darkest history, who will fight to keep memory — and justice — alive?

Although Netflix has yet to announce a release date, filming will begin next month in the United Kingdom, Germany, Bulgaria, and Spain.

Morgan is developing the adaptation alongside London-based production companies World Productions and Orchid Pictures. Suzanne Mackie will serve as executive producer for Orchid, strengthening her long-standing creative partnership with Morgan following their work together on The Crown.

The series will be directed entirely by Alex Gabassi (Black Doves, The Crown), who will also executive produce alongside Mackie and Simon Heath (Line of Duty, Save Me) for World Productions. Oona O’Beirn and Andy Stebbing, also former members of The Crown team, will serve as producers.

The project will feature a stellar cast led by Jeremy Strong, August Diehl, Daniel Brühl, and Gillian Anderson. Shira Haas and Lizzy Caplan also join the ensemble, rounding out a high-caliber lineup for this historical thriller.

A story spanning three decades

Set from the aftermath of World War II through the turbulent 1970s, The Boys from Brazil follows Yakov Liebermann, a Holocaust survivor and Nazi hunter, in his lifelong mission to bring fugitive war criminals to justice.

When a young protégé working undercover in Brazil uncovers a sinister Nazi plan, Liebermann is thrust into a race against time to expose an unimaginable truth: the scientist Johann-Friedrich Meinhardt — long believed dead — is alive and executing a project designed to trigger the rise of a Fourth Reich.

Jeremy Strong will portray Yakov Liebermann; August Diehl will play the menacing Meinhardt; Daniel Brühl will take on the role of Von Harteneck; and Gillian Anderson will portray Frieda Steiner. Shira Haas will play Anna Koehler, and Lizzy Caplan will portray Hannah Liebermann.
