Produced by Luis Cabrera, from Los Angeles

International distributor Comarex arrived at the new edition of LA Screenings with a strengthened catalog, brimming with content and new releases resulting from strategic alliances with key partners in the international market.

“This year we are focusing on content from Canal Once in Mexico, certain dramas from Canal 13 in Chile, and we’ve acquired Mediaset’s religious content for a new account, which, although seasonal and always more helpful for Christmas and Easter, are stories that are always in demand,” began Ernesto Ramírez, deputy director of Comarex, in an interview with ttvnews.

“And we’ve also been acquiring certain film titles for distribution, Mexican films and some American films,” he added.

In addition to content distribution, the group is also exploring original production.

“We’re also investing a bit in development. If all goes well, we might be awarded EFICINE (Tax Incentive for National Film Production and Distribution) funding to produce a horror film. We’re right at the end of the funding period for this semester, so we’ll open applications toward the end of June if we’re selected.”

“We’re focusing a bit on those kinds of productions with EFICINE funding, and we’re looking for partnerships with producers, specifically regarding films, to explore potential pre-sales,” he added.

Why invest in the horror genre? “It’s a genre that performs very well globally,” the executive explained. “Horror works very well everywhere. In Peru, horror films do very well, even though they’re genre films, and some say they’re niche, but they work very well everywhere. You can work with smaller budgets because you don’t need star talent, you can use more controlled locations. And in the end, the genre allows you to explore; you can make a supernatural thriller, and there are no creative limitations.”

KC Global Media and Comarex announced they have secured the rights from Paramount Global Content Distribution to adapt the local format of the acclaimed series Ray Donovan.

Its presentation to the market began this year, and a real enthusiasm is already palpitating among buyers, platforms and television stations who see the project as one of the most anticipated events of the year. The adaptation promises a production of the highest level, merging the best local talent with the internationally successful format.

“We are excited to bring this gripping narrative to Mexico and Latin America, where we know the themes of family, power, loyalty, and the struggle against one’s past will strike a profound chord within Latin culture,” said Andy Kaplan Co Founder & Chairman, of KC Global.

“By combining world-class local creative talent with the proven structure of Ray Donovan, we will deliver an authentic, intense, and deeply relevant version for our region”, said Marcel Vinay CEO of Comarex.

KC Global and Comarex will collaborate closely on the development of this adaptation, incorporating authentic cultural elements from Mexico and Latin America while preserving the core essence of crime drama, high-stakes action, and emotional depth that made the original series iconic.

The series has already proven its strong international appeal with a highly successful adaptation in India titled Rana Naidu, produced for Netflix and starring acclaimed actors Venkatesh Daggubati and Rana Daggubati. Launched in 2023, it quickly rose to become one of the most-watched series in India, holding the #1 spot on local charts for several consecutive weeks and ranking in Netflix’s global Top 10 for non-English content, leading to its renewal for a second season. This remake demonstrated that the story’s powerful themes of family loyalty, organized crime, personal redemption, and moral conflict resonate deeply with audiences beyond the United States.

The format rights for the series are licensed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Times of change and evolution, this is how Ernesto Ramirez, deputy director of Comarex, defined the reality of the entertainment industry in 2023, in a dialogue he had with ttvnews while he participated in the new edition of LA Screenings Independents.

“Entertainment had growth in the post-pandemic period, but I think now we are seeing a rethinking of how the platforms are working,” Ramírez said. “Studios have realized that content cannot be stopped on a platform. The industry is going to move towards sales and windowing, not so much towards originals. We are in that change.”

Regarding Comarex, Ramírez highlighted several titles from his catalog: “We continue to distribute from Channel 13 in Chile and Channel 11 in Mexico. We also bring some films, such as Casi una gran estafa, which is a Mexican comedy; we have a show Divas & Persignadas, it is by two comedians from Guadalajara,” he commented.

“We also bring El Apostól, which will premiere on a pay TV channel in Latin America and will be available starting in January. It talks about the Luz del Mundo church, it’s a pretty strong topic,” added the executive.

“We also have a film that Gravitas produced called Green Ghost & the Masters of the Stone, which alludes to ‘gringo’ and is about an American who has to fight against evil together with his Mexican brothers,” Ramírez shared.

For the remainder of 2024, Comarex will continue working on a development that it is carrying out for a platform: “We are already in the process of writing its treatment, inspired by a Spanish play. It is a comedy”.

“We are also going to be present at Conecta and Iberseries with three projects that we are writing for the pitching and co-production forums. We go with co-producers from Spain in some and from Mexico in others,” he added.
