Created by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo (Veneno, Paquita Salas), the seven-episode series features an outstanding ensemble cast including Macarena García, Roger Casamajor, Lola Dueñas, Carmen Machi, Ana Rujas, Albert Pla, Amaia, Biel Rossell Pelfort, and Cecilia Roth.
“La Mesías is a family drama that explores overcoming trauma, faith as a tool to fill a void, education, childhood, the possibility of forgiveness, and art as the only escape from terror. This dramatic series follows the journey of its two protagonists toward healing,” said creators Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo about the story.
Set in 2012, the story follows Enric, who suffers a panic attack after watching a viral video of a Christian pop band made up of six sisters singing to the Virgin Mary. The performance triggers his darkest childhood memories, shaped by religious fanaticism and a mother with messianic delusions. Determined to save the girls from the same abuse he endured, Enric and his sister Irene set out on a journey to find them, uncovering the secrets of their own past along the way.
La Mesías has been widely recognized internationally, following its selection at Sundance, further cementing its impact within the industry. The series won two awards at Series Mania, including Best Director and the Student Award for Best Series, as well as seven PRODU Awards, including Best Director, Best Drama Miniseries, and acting honors for Carmen Machi and Amaia Romero. It also received two Platino Awards, including Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Series for Lola Dueñas and Best Supporting Actress for Carmen Machi. Additional honors include six Feroz Awards, one Rockie Award, two New York Festivals TV & Film Awards, three Forqué Awards, and one Ondas Award, underscoring the prestige of both the production and its cast.
Directed, written, and produced by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, La Mesías is a Movistar Plus+ original series in collaboration with Suma Content. Executive producers include Domingo Corral, Fran Araujo, and Susana Herreras. Roger Bellés serves as production designer, Ana López Cobos as costume designer, Mariló Osuna as head of makeup, Gris Jordana as director of photography, and Raül Refree and Hidrogenesse as composers of the original score.
