Spanish movie El hoyo ranked ninth in Netflix’s ranking of top 10 most popular movies, according to Bloomberg.

Just like Money Heist was once the most popular foreign series in Netflix history (and one of the most popular overall), Spain once again scored a win for the platform, this time, in the movie world.

Spanish film El hoyo (distributed internationally as The Platform) is the most popular non-English language film in Netflix history.

The OTT platform revealed the Top 10 of its most popular films to Bloomberg, revealing that El hoyo -produced by Basque Films and Mr Miyagi Films- ranked ninth with 56 million views in its first four weeks.

The ranking is led by Extraction (2020), starring Chris Hemsworth, which reached 99 million views in its first four weeks.

Second is Bird Box (2018) with 89 million, followed by Spenser Confidential (2020) in third place with 85 million.

As revealed by the Top 3, people prefer action movies starring big Hollywood A-listers. Other movies in that genre are 6 Underground (2019, 83 million) and Triple Frontier (2019, 63 million).

Comedy is also a big genre, with films such as Murder Mystery (2019, 73 million) The Wrong Missy (2020, 59 million) and The Perfect Date (2019, 48 million).

And niche films, such as El hoyo, also have some fans, with The Irishman (2019, 64 million) also on the list.
