The number of pay TV subscribers in Latin America will remain between 53 and 54 million amid SVOD growth.

Pay TV in Latin America will remain without further growth in terms of subscribers, according to the Latin America Pay TV Forecasts report by the analysis firm Digital TV Research, which predicts that the number of pay TV subscribers in Latin America will remain between 53 and 54 million.

This figure is lower than the peak of 73 million reached in 2017, with which a decline in the number of subscribers in the region can be noticed. Brazil lost 9 million subscribers between 2015 and 2023 but will only lose 2 million between 2023 and 2029 to total 7.8 million.

Mexico has more pay-TV subscribers than Brazil despite having far fewer TV households. Mexico has lost subscribers since its peak year of 2016 (21 million) but will now settle at around 16 million.

Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, commented that most – not all – Latin American countries are emerging from economic recessions and periods of social unrest, which negatively affected the pay-TV sector.

“Pay-TV also has to contend with the well-served SVOD sector, with the major U.S.-based platforms all operating in Latin America,” he said.
