The historic drama, produced by Diagonal TV for Atresmedia, TV3 and Netflix, will premiere on Italian TV through a deal between Endemol Shine International and Mediaset Italy.

Endemol Shine International announced a new deal with Mediaset Italy for the successful Spanish drama, The Cathedral of the Sea.

The deal was negotiated by Fabrizio De Leo, senior director of Sales at Endemol Shine International – Italy and Iberia.

“The cathedral of the sea is a powerful historical drama with great emotions and great characters. Non-English-speaking fiction continues to attract the attention of the public and the networks, and we are delighted that Mediaset gives its viewers the opportunity to enjoy this series of eight high-quality episodes in Spanish,” said Mark Lawrence, executive director of Endemol Shine International – EMEA.

Based on the best-selling novel by Ildefonso Falcones, The Cathedral of the Sea is an epic series of eight one-hour episodes, produced by Diagonal TV (producer of Endemol Shine Iberia) for Atresmedia Televisión, Televisió de Catalunya (TV3) and Netflix.

The story is set in the thriving Barcelona of the fourteenth century, a city that has grown to La Ribera, a humble fishing district where the largest Marian temple ever built is being created: Santa María del Mar. Revenge, love and betrayal they mix in a fascinating story, set in medieval Barcelona, where religious intolerance and social segregation spread throughout the land.

The award-winning series premiered on Antena 3 in May 2018 and became the number one series on the network for that season. The series was launched worldwide on Netflix last year.

Currently, Diagonal TV is working on the development of Heirs of the Earth, a continuation of The Cathedral of the Sea.

“The scripts are being written and production will begin in 2020, with a release date for 2021. This time it will be first on Netflix, which is the one with the majority rights in this case,” Jaume Benacolocha, CEO of Diagonal TV, told ttvnews.
