The platform announced that BH Entertainment and Contents Zium from South Korea will adapt the Spanish hit created by Álex Pina and Esther M. Lobato.

Netflix announced on Tuesday that Money Heist, the Spanish series that has won the International Emmy and has established itself as one of the platform’s biggest phenomena globally, will have a Korean version.

The production will have 12 episodes and will be developed by production companies BH Entertainment and Contents Zium. It will be directed by Kim Hong-sun (The Guest, Voice, Black) and will be written by Ryu Yong-jae (My Holo Love, Psychopath Diary) and his team.

Álex Pina, creator and executive producer of Money Heist, and founder of his production company Vancouver Media, was delighted with the project: “Korean creators have developed their own audiovisual culture over the years. Like our series, they have managed to cross cultural boundaries and become a benchmark for thousands of viewers around the world, especially among young people,“ he said.

“That’s why I find it fascinating that they find the world of La casa de papel so attractive as to make an adaptation. The fact that the action is taking place on the Korean peninsula also seems like a milestone that I am really delighted with,” he added.

For the platform, “the international popularity of the Spanish series Money Heist shows that Netflix can distribute meaningful titles based on different cultures and languages, and that they are loved by audiences around the world.”

Money Heist premiered for the first time on Antena 3 in 2017, and after its broadcast on broadcast TV it reached Netflix, where it achieved unprecedented success for Spanish fiction.

The streaming service became the home of its new seasons, and became the most-watched foreign-language series in Netflix history. The fourth installment was seen by more than 65 million households around the world in the first four weeks since its launch, in April 2020, as revealed by the platform itself.

Money Heist will end with its fifth season, filmed during this year.
