Day one of the event organized by TTV Media Group, as part of the launch of its new B2B: TTV+ platform, began this Tuesday with two strong panels aimed at debating the future of content production and broadcast TV.

The first day of the TTV+ Live: The Future of TV Content virtual event, which is taking place as part of the launch of the TTV+ platform through December 18, began this Tuesday with two strong panels to debate about the future of production and broadcast TV.

The first panel, Spanish Producers: What Now? featured Sonia Martínez, Editorial Director, Buendía Estudios (Spain); Javier Pons, General Director of Globomedia & Co-head of TV, The Mediapro Studio (Spain); and José Manuel Lorenzo, CEO, DLO Producciones (Spain); and was moderated by Conchi Cascajosa, profesor and researcher for the Carlos III University in Madrid de Madrid and writer specializing in TV fiction (Spain).

The panel sought to answer questions about the current challenges faced by Spanish fiction.

In this sense, each of the panelists focused on their task. “Spanish fiction was not born two years ago with Money Heist, but for 25 years it has been leading lines of work that have taken it up to this moment”, Javier Pons stressed.

“Technologies and platforms have allowed us to multiply that presence we already had,” added the executive, who highlighted The Head as a global scale project.

In addition, Sonia Martínez shared the experience of the Spanish producer, highlighting fictions such as Veneno, which, being such an iconic Spanish character, reaches international audiences.

“I think that Spanish fiction has been working and doing industry for a long time,” said Martínez. “I believe that where we are is a product of the industrial level we have and the challenges we face,” she added.

José Manuel Lorenzo commented on projects such as La Caza. Monteperdido or Dime quién soy, with great global traction.

“The takeoff of Spanish fiction dates back to the arrival of private channels in the 90s with fiction as an element of propagation, well above what was done in Italy, for example,” he said.

Likewise, the executive stressed that at that time it was necessary to “train technicians, scriptwriters, producers” and that based on this natural growth -in addition to the arrival of platforms- it was the foundation to “begin to succeed internationally.”

Up next was the day’s second panel: Programmers, Keys and Strategies to Continue Leading, which featured Eric Jurgensen, Chief Content Officer, América TV (Peru), Jimmy Arteaga, President of Programming, Wapa TV (Puerto Rico) and José A. Miranda, Director of Programming, Canal 13 (Chile); and was moderated by Sebastián Amoroso, Editorial Director, TTV News.

In this session, and given the advancement of OTT platforms, we sought to learn about the reinvention of broadcast TV, necessary to continue leading in their respective markets.

Eric Jurgensen said that OTT platforms are “a direct complement” to traditional offers. In the case of América TV, the executive highlighted that América Go was one of the first digital experiences in the region with a mixed model: free and paid. “We are the channel with the application that has the most audience, we reached an average of 3.1% of our audience,” he said.

In addition, Artega said that “although they can affect the performance of the online channels, the platforms do not have live production and news. They are probably one of the largest products that exist and one of the great reasons why broadcast TV continues to exist,” and in this sense, he highlighted the leadership role of broadcast TV in this year of pandemic.

Meanwhile, Miranda said that Channel 13 launched its 13 Now service, and indicated that the key to leadership is content and, especially, live content. “Live TV, the proximity, makes it a differentiating element. As long as we have live, informative TV, I think open TV has an important space compared to OTT. And the OTT does not generate the same fidelity that TV generates”, he concluded.
