Canadian startup Wattpad announced a development and production deal with Wise Entertainment for the Brazilian market.

The storytelling platform Wattpad announced this week an agreement with producer Wise Entertainment, which will develop and produce series and films for the Brazilian market based on stories in Portuguese published on Wattpad.

Created in 2006 in Canada, Wattpad is a free platform and community where users can publish stories, fan fiction or poems.

For some time now, the platform has been closing agreements with producers to go through its catalog of stories to produce series and films. They have already signed agreements with companies such as Sony Pictures Television, Universal Cable Productions and Entertainment One, among others.

And now, after having already closed deals in North America, Europe and Asia, Brazil becomes the first territory in Latin America to join forces with Wattpad.

As they detailed, Wattpad will use its machine-learning technology to identify stories in the Teen or Young Adults genres for Wise, producer of the Hulu’s Hispanic-themed series East Los High, with offices in Los Angeles and New York.

Wise will then develop, produce and distribute the stories.

“Wattpad has created an ecosystem that is both a storytelling community and a cultural compass to find IPs and new voices,” said Mauricio Mota, co-president of Wise.
