One of the consequences of the expansion of streaming has been the internationalization of content. However, not all genres and productions connect with audiences everywhere in the world. That’s where the experience and good eye of a distributor with know-how comes into play when it comes to curating a catalog that is capable of crossing borders internationally.

“We have found content that is truly universal,” Alejandro Veciana, International Sales executive at FilmRise, summed up in a conversation with ttvnews during Natpe Global in Miami.

Leading the catalog is “one of the most universal genres,” explained the executive: true crime. “We have been trying things out, because we have been in the business for many years and we have had the advantage of trying different things. We have many clients and platforms, with many points to measure what works or not, and we saw that true crime works. With series like Forensic Files and Unsolved Mysteries, they helped us see that true crime works and has no borders.”

“FilmRise is positioned as a TV studio and distributor that can acquire content that really works in various markets. True crime is one of them. It works well in the US as well as in Latin America as anywhere in the world,” he added.

Another genre that crosses borders is classic series, which “work in all countries, because everyone is nostalgic for the series they watched before,” said the executive. “Highway to Heaven is a phenomenon. It had an impressive success in Mexico in the 80s, in France, in Germany in the 90s… people are nostalgic to see these series that they remember and have not seen since then, and that they are rediscovering in streaming.”

“FilmRise has a talent for finding these series and IPs that bring comfort to so many people in so many markets. The key is that it works in so many markets,” he concluded.
