In a year in which the documentary genre shined for its popularity, not only in Spain but worldwide, CAPA España, Grupo iZen’s documentary brand, embarked on several highly successful productions and is preparing to continue a year of a lot of work.

“For us it is a good moment because the documentary is experiencing a golden age in Spain and around the world,” Santi Aguado, general director of CAPA España, said to ttvnews from Content Americas.

As the director explained, this golden era is due, in part, to the boom in streaming platforms and the increase in investment in production in shorter formats.

“The world of platforms has also brought this golden age of TV series. The quality of series on platforms is on par with the quality of cinema and this transfer also fits into the documentary. The format of the documentary series, which allows us to work on longer developments and go deeper into the stories,” the executive explained.

“The key is to use some resources from fiction cinema to tell documentary stories, and thus connect with the general public. And that means that the documentary, which was previously seen as an alternative and even boring format, has become an entertainment format,” he added.

Present at Content Americas, CAPA España is pitching a documentary about a well-known dancer from their country called Farruquito. “The pitch went very well, it was very popular, and the truth is that it is a fantastic opportunity for us to network, establish relationships with production companies and potential buyers. After the presentation, several people interested in the project approached us,” Aguado said.

Additionally, this morning Netflix announced the official premiere of (P)Ícaro: El Pequeno Nicolás, a CAPA production for the platform, which will arrive on February 15.

“The trailer has already been released online and has generated a lot of interest, because he is a very media personality in Spain, a boy who at only 10 years old entered the highest spheres of power in Spain and there are many unknowns about what he did. They have already asked us for several interviews and we are very encouraged,” he concluded.
